Language Of The Depressed

The language of the depressed.

You have to listen carefully
Don’t give an opinion unless asked
Sometimes they just want to be heard
Just want their problems recognised
Empathy is often interpreted as pity
Support is to be there and pay attention
To help if asked for
Or to ask if there’s anything you can do to help
Unrequested advice or help is seen as bullying
The language is often coded
The problem is depersonalised
Spoke about in the the 3rd person
Or approached obliquely
Because they are embarrassed
By listening and paying attention
Watching the body language
Feeling the energy
Allowing them to talk
Until they feel comfortable
You can be the greatest help
Be a good friend
And help them feel less isolated.
