How To Be Happy

Happiness is a decision and a habit. It has doesn’t necessarily have to do with where you are, what you are doing or who you are with. It’s possible to be a happy person by deciding to be happy and by setting up a few habits that help you to remember that you are a happy person and why.

How do we find that elusive state of being whatever is going on in our life and maintain it?

Make the decision. Decide that you are a happy person and that wherever you are, whoever you are with and whatever you are doing that you will be happy.

Press the ‘Happy Button’. Every morning when you wake up, put an imaginary ‘Happy Button’ in the middle of your chest and press it first thing to remind yourself to be happy – and keep pressing it throughout the day until it becomes a permanent habit.

Turn that frown upside down. Smile and keep smiling, a smile is infectious and helps everybody around you to be happy. Greet everyone with a smile and see the difference in how they treat you. A happy person is always a pleasure to be with.

Meditate. This puts your life in balance and reminds you that life is precious and to be savoured.

Happiness fluctuates. Sometimes you’re ill, sometimes worried, sometimes grieving, it’s all a part of the tapestry of life, sometimes you feel bursting with happiness and others quite sad or stressed. Because you’ve developed the habit of happiness you have the wisdom that everything changes and you keep that underlying happiness – it’s just fluctuating – you haven’t lost it it’s in the background of whatever you’re feeling at the time.

Enjoy everything. If you have things that make you happy and things that make you unhappy you will only be happy when you are doing that which ‘make you happy’. Find enjoyment in everything, try to do everything well, however mundane the task do it mindfully, carefully and treat it as an enjoyable task – remember happiness is a decision!

Develop patience, kindness tolerance and compassion. You meditation practice and ‘pressing the Happy Button’ daily will help you in this. You don’t have to like a person to be patient, kind and compassionate towards them, the more you develop this attitude towards others, the better you feel about yourself.

Have a healthy body as well as a healthy mind. A healthy body always helps, eat fresh food and drink quality products – and find exercise that you enjoy – don’t punish yourself! Walk the dog, do gardening, go swimming, dance and do Tai Chi or Yoga, find exercise that you enjoy.

Remember, smile, be patient and kind, press that ‘Happy Button’ and always enjoy what you do!
