‘Behind The Door’ Teaching

When we begin martial arts study we have to spend time learning the structured basic layers and developing a relationship with our teacher.

We are taught using key words and phrases to learn the basic ideas and principles behind our posture, breathing, strategies, techniques, mind, emotions and behaviour.

As we develop, the relationship with our teacher deepens to the point where our energy and understanding is in harmony and the methods can go deeper. It’s at this point that what is often described as ‘secret’, ‘behind the door’ or ‘discipleship’ can be offered. Every system has its method of recognising this, some with ceremonies, certification or grades and may involve payment, but this outward recognition is not the important part. When the student is ready, the deeper teaching can begin.

When the basic levels have been internalised, trust and respect have been earned and the energy of teacher and student are in harmony, this bond means that teaching can be by small ‘adjustments’ that can connect the entire body and ‘direct transmission’ by demonstration, sounds and ‘off the cuff’ explanations made from and to the ‘wordless mind’, from ‘heart to heart’ or ‘soul to soul’ and can be very effective, this kind of loyalty and understanding is a rare treasure in the martial arts and can be life long.

If the trust and loyalty is broken or betrayed then everything else fails and the treasure is lost like a shattered glass it can’t ever really be put back together again.

If teacher and student find each other in this way and both are able to build and develop this relationship over time I think that it is a rare life treasure and should be cared for and guarded as such.
