When your dog is suffering
And has no quality of life
You put him out of his misery
Yet we let relatives and ourselves
Suffer interminably
Places of healing become places of torture
Hospitals and hospices leave people writhing in pain
Demented human bodies are left in fear
Wandering like the undead
To placate their relatives, the law and outdated religion
We have the choice
But not the method
When we don’t have the mind or body
To complete the act
We need a way to be out of our misery
Governments kick the can down the road
The young and healthy don’t want to think about it
Convincing everyone it’s an act of cowardice
And not fair on those left behind
But it’s not their choice
And sometimes someone has to take responsibility for those not capable
But at the moment it’s unfair
It’s a difficult subject
But needs to be addressed
Better to leave with dignity at the right time and in the right place
Than to suffer or have to try yourself.
